ON THE ELECTION OF POPE BENEDICT XVI
With great joy, the Diocese of La Crosse joins with our Catholic brothers and sisters around the world in celebrating the election of Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) as the new successor of St. Peter. We give thanks to God who has given us a Shepherd to lead us and to guide us.
We pray that, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, God will bless, protect, and strengthen Pope Benedict XVI as he begins his ministry to the universal Church and to the world. Through our new Supreme Pontiff, may the Good News of peace, hope, and salvation continue to reach all the ends of the earth, as the human family continues to go forward into the Third Millennium. May God who has begun this good work in Pope Benedict XVI bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (cf. Phil 1:6).

ON THE DEATH OF POPE JOHN PAUL II
The death of Pope John Paul II is a loss not only for the church but for the entire world. His life was a gift to all humanity. In his defense of the 'dignity of the person,' his challenge to nations to live peacefully, his openness to all seeking the truth, he has elevated the human discourse.
For we as Catholics, our sadness stems from the loss of Peter, this 'rock' upon which Christ established his church. He has been our leader fro almost 27 years. There are many among us who have known no other pope. Our consolation rests in the Risen Lord whose life is freely given for us and our gratitude to God who has so providentially given His church and the world the person of Karol Wojtyla.
Now Pope John Paul II belongs to the ages as his imprint Totus Tuus 'Totally Yours' lives on with us. We entrust him to our Lord and pray that his Mother Mary now embrace her faithful son.
