"The witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom,
[Cf.
Heb
12:1 .] especially those whom the Church recognizes as SAINTS,
share in the living tradition of prayer by the example of their lives, the
transmission of their writings, and their prayer today. They contemplate God,
praise him and constantly care for those whom they have left on earth. When they
entered into the joy of their Master, they were 'put in charge of many things.' [Cf.
Mt
25:21 .] Their intercession is their most exalted service to God's
plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole
world."

1173. "When the Church keeps the memorials of martyrs and other SAINTS during the annual cycle, she proclaims the Paschal mystery in those 'who have suffered and have been glorified with Christ. She proposes them to the faithful as examples who draw all men to the Father through Christ, and through their merits she begs for God's favors.'[SC 104; cf. SC 108, 111.]"

"By keeping the memorials of the SAINTS - first of all the holy Mother of God, then the apostles, the martyrs, and other SAINTS - on fixed days of the liturgical year, the Church on earth shows that she is united with the liturgy of heaven. She gives glory to Christ for having accomplished his salvation in his glorified members; their example encourages her on her way to the Father."

supernatural order, grace escapes our experience and cannot be known except by
faith. We cannot therefore rely on our feelings or our works to conclude that we
are justified and saved.[Cf. Council of Trent (1547): DS
1533-1534.] However, according to the Lord's words 'Thus you will know
them by their fruits'[Mt
7:20 .] - reflection on God's blessings in our life and in the lives
of the SAINTS offers us a guarantee that grace is
at work in us and spurs us on to an ever greater faith and an attitude of
trustful poverty.
A pleasing illustration of this attitude is found in the reply of St. Joan of
Arc to a question posed as a trap by her ecclesiastical judges: 'Asked if she
knew that she was in God's grace, she replied: 'If I am not, may it please God
to put me in it; if I am, may it please God to keep me there.''[Acts
of the trial of St . Joan of Arc.]"

2416. "Animals are God's creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory.[Cf. Mt 6:26 ; Dan 3:79-81 .] Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which SAINTS like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals. "
