Saint Peregrine

As a young man he was part of a party that opposed the pope. He met up with St. Philip Benizi, the head of the Servite order, who had been sent to try to bring together the divided community. While he tried to preach St. Philip Benizi was harassed and even hit on the cheek by Peregrine, who was very enthusiastic about his cause. That event changed Peregrine. He was deeply touched when Saint Philip offered him the other cheek. He began to devote the time and energy he had been using to divide and became Catholic. He did many good works and eventually joined the Servites order. He studied and was ordained a priest. When he went back to his home town, he founded a new Servite house there and became well known for his preaching and holiness. He was very devoted to the sick and those living in poverty.
One of the special penances he decided on was to stand whenever it was not necessary to sit. It is said that Peregrine did not sit down for more than thirty years. Over time, Peregrine developed varicose veins and then cancer of the foot. The sores became painful and doctors were not able to do anything to make it better. A local surgeon said the only thing to do was to amputate Peregrine's leg.
The night before the surgery to amputate his leg Peregrine spent much time in prayer before the crucified Jesus, asking God's healing if it was God’s will to do so. He fell asleep and had a vision of the crucified Jesus coming down from the cross and touching his cancerous leg. When he woke up the sores were healed and his foot and leg were cured. His foot and leg were not amputated. Peregrine lived twenty more years. He had the reputation of being a great preacher and confessor. Like Saint Paul, he was converted and his life truly changed. He died in the year 1345 at the age of 85 and was canonized a Saint by Saint Benedict XIII in 1726.

God, who have Saint Peregrine angel as his companion, the Mother of God as his teacher, and Jesus as the physician for his illness; grant, we ask You, that we on earth may intensely love the Blessed Virgin Mary and our Savior, and in Heaven bless them forever. Grant that we receive the favor for which we now ask through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Saint Peregrine Novena Prayer
Oh great Saint Peregrine, you
who have been called "The Mighty" and "The Wonder-Worker" because of the
numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had
recourse to you. For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous
disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the
source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favored
with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask
of God and Our Lady, the cure of these sick persons whom we entrust to you.

Peregrino
Una de las penitencias especiales que eligió fue el estar de pie en tanto no fuere necesario estar sentado. Se dice que Peregrino no llegó a sentarse en más de treinta años. Con el tiempo Peregrino desarrolló venas varicosas y despues cáncer en un pie. Las llagas llegaron a ser muy dolorosas y los doctores no pudieron hacer nada para aliviarle. Un cirujano local dijo que lo único que podían hacer era amputarle la pierna a Peregrino.
La noche antes de la cirugía para amputarle la pierna, Peregrino pasó mucho tiempo en oración ante Jesús Crucificado, pidiéndole a Dios que lo curara si esa era Su voluntad. Se durmió y tuvo una visión en la que Jesús Crucificado bajó de la cruz y le tocó la pierna cancerosa. Cuando se despertó las llagas estaban curadas al igual que su pie y su pierna. No fue necesario amputarle ni el pie ni la pierna. Peregrino vivió veinte años más. Tenía fama de ser un gran predicador y confesor. Al igual que San Pablo, se convirtió y su vida en verdad que cambió. Murió en el año de 1345 a la edad de 85 años y fue canonizado por San Benedicto XIII en el año de 1726.

Oh gran San Peregrino, tu que has sido llamado "El Poderoso" y "El hacedor de maravillas" a causa de los numerosos milagros que has obtenido de Dios en favor de quienes han recurrido a ti. Por muchos años sufriste en carne propia esta enfermedad cancerosa que destruye las fibras mas profundas de nuestro ser y recurriste a la fuente de toda Gracia cuando el poder del hombre no podía hacer más. Fuiste favorecido con la visión de Jesús bajando de Su Cruz para sanar tu aflicción. Pide a Dios y a Nuestra Señora la curación de estas personas enfermas que te encomendamos.
Así ayudados por tu intercesión poderosa, cantamos a Dios, ahora y por toda la eternidad, una canción de gratitud por Su gran bondad y misericordia. Amén.

Saint
Peregrine Laziosi is the patron of those who have cancer and HIV/AIDS. He was
born in Forli, Italy in the year 1260.
St.
Peregrine is the patron saint of those who have cancer. Each Friday night at
7:00 P.M. Eastern Time, Father Jeddie Brooks of St. Patrick Catholic Church in
Monson, Massachusetts celebrates a Mass of Healing and a Novena to St. Peregrine
remembering those with cancer or HIV/AIDS. 
San
Peregrino Laziosi es el patrón de quienes tienen cáncer y HIV/ SIDA. Nació en
Forli, Italia en el el año de 1260. De joven formó parte de un partido que se
oponía al Papa. Conoció a San Felipe Benizi, cabeza de la orden Servite, quien
había sido enviado a tratar de unir a la comunidad dividida. Mientras trataba
de predicar, San Felipe Benizi fue amenazado e incluso golpeado en la mejilla
por Peregrino, quien era un entusiasta de la causa opositora al Papa. Este
incidente hizo que Peregrino cambiara. El quedó profundamente impresionado
cuando San Felipe le ofreció la otra mejilla para ser golpeado. Empezó a
consagrar el tiempo y energía que había usado para dividir y terminó
convirtiéndose al catolicismo. Hizo muchas buenas obras y eventualmente ingresó
en la Orden de los Servitas. Estudió y fue ordenado sacerdote. Cuando volvió
a su pueblo natal, fundó una nueva casa de la Orden de los Servita y llegó a ser
bien conocido por lo que predicaba y por su santidad. Se consagró a los
enfermos y a aquellos viviendo en la pobreza.
