We remember the dead in our prayers in a special way.

are helped by our prayers as we are helped by theirs.  Let us Pray!

The Communion of Saints

"In the communion of saints, a ‘perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things.’ In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others....

"We also call these spiritual goods of the communion of saints the Church’s treasury....In the treasury, too, are the prayers and good works of all the saints, all those who have followed in the footsteps of Christ the Lord and by his grace have made their lives holy and carried out the mission of the Father entrusted to them." (Catechism, #1475-77)

Why Christians Reject the Occult

"All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone." (Catechism, #2116)

Dabbling with fortune-telling, Ouija boards, horoscopes, psychic friends, etc. can open the door to evil and fear.  We can give something that is damaging power in our lives.  We can come to believe in this power to harm ourselves or others, or even be fooled into thinking it might help us.  God is the one who is all-powerful, infinitely more powerful than any evil.  Jesus died and rose in order to show us that.  He conquered the powers of sin and death.  It's dangerous for us to open such a door, because we can easily be fooled into fear and give such powers reign in our lives.  It's common for high school students and others to be totally freaked out after dabbling in fortune-telling, Ouija boards, thoughts of witchcraft, etc.  Even the Harry Potter books and similar materials contain the message that spells, incantations, etc. are good ... and that power is somehow derived from sources other than from God.  A door can easily be opened, to something that is not helpful at all.

It has become customary at Saint Patrick Parish for us to light candles  on All Souls Day in memory of our deceased loved ones.
A candle was lit in memory of
the deceased friends and loved ones of our cyber-members.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. AMEN.
